For any passionate rider, the basic elements of motorcycle design and its visual appeal of mechanical parts is an ejoyable addiction. Be it the muscular engine design, its cooling fins, exhaust pipes, fuel tank, instrument dial, the die-cast wheels or even simple switches, they all can engage a motorcyclist for hours as they are nothing but a piece of art. This is how the fashion of classic motorcycles was reborn again as every rider wants to see the artistic impression of each mechanical part. That is why Harley Davidson motorcycles have been famous for their visual appeal since ages as each part was so meticulously designed.
Once again history has been created after around 90 years, by the BMW as they are ready to launch an engineering marvel, remaking the R5 motorcycle model of 1930 to the largest and heaviest BMW ever produced till date, yes, I am talking about BMW R18, a modern classic cruiser.
It is strange to see that in such a time when the whole world is rethinking to survive in the business, BMW designed largest 1800 cc monumental Boxer engine which is air-cooled without any worries of emission norms. But the innovation and creativity don’t end with just the engine but the BMW engineers used the oldest possible style of design in most modern ways thereby keeping the element of freshness as their first choice.
Just as an example BMW created a fully exposed driveshaft with two special universal joints which will be seen in motion as seen in few old helicopters. Certainly, today when the whole world is going towards all enclosed sealed electrical engines; use of a fully exposed drive shaft means something entirely new which is not seen on any other motorcycle.
The whole motorcycle is made just from the most essential parts which can be removed easily just to ensure that one can customize the motorcycle as per their taste and liking. So the design is kept very simple to provide strongest visual appeal of each motorcycle part.
R18 is fitted with the biggest boxer engine with 1800 cc capacity, however, produces only 91 horsepower, but with a huge torque of 150 Nm right from 2000 engine rpm to give you a most thrilling ride from the word go. This bike is not about being the fastest but more of a style statement in the digital age.
Retro looks which are carried forward from a 1930 old R 5, may look really very old but the heart of BMW R18 is fully loaded with very modern electronics including some fashionable riding modes like the Rain, Rock and Roll. Rider assist and safety features like the traction control, cruise control, hill-hold control, ride-by-wire throttle, keyless ignition, heated grips, cornering lights and combined ABS are part of the system.
The classic round display indicates that this motorcycle is built at BMW’s Berlin-Spandau factory.
On this Cruiser with a beautifully crafted seat, it is difficult to see the rear shocker but a shock absorber with 90 mm of wheel travel is fixed at the rear on a double loop tubular steel frame. The front telescopic 49mm fork with 4.7 inches of travel, uses two 300 mm brake discs in front and one at the rear. The Spoked wheels are 19 inches in front, and 16 inches at the rear.
The fishtail exhaust is beautifully crafted and produces a very pleasing engine sound.
The R 18 will be available worldwide in a special First Edition model, which includes the signature black paint with white pin striping, chrome details, “First Edition” badge and much more, maybe by the year-end.
The R18 is going to cost approximately Rs 24 Lakh as per the Indian price which is not yet officially confirmed.
With the induction of a new classic cruiser using the biggest iconic air-cooled boxer engine which also has a heritage of being used in the World War I and II fighter aircraft, BMW has entered a new territory which was till now dominated by the Harley Davidson motorcycles.
So be ready to Rock and Roll as the old made new, BMW R18 enters the world market by the year-end.
