York Walk: City Walls & Snickelways【4K】

The city of York is one of few places to boast both a Roman and a Viking history.

Founded in 71 AD, the Romans called it Eboracum, and emperors Hadrian, Septimius Severus and Constantius I (father of Constantine the Great) all held court in York.

In the 9th century AD, the vikings, led by Ivar the Boneless, conquered the city, naming it Jórvík. It served as a crucial outpost in what was then part of the Kingdom of Northumbria, with relative proximity to Scandinavia. Evidence of its Viking past is clear from the street names with many of them taking the suffix -gate, which come from the Old Norse word for street, 'gata'.

One striking element about York is its city walls. These were originally built back in the 1st century AD as Roman fortifications. Much of the walls are intact today, albeit in segments, and as you can see from the video, can be walked across free of charge!

York Minster is the iconic cathedral we approach after walking the walls. Built between 1230 and 1472, it is said to be the second largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, behind Cologne.

At the 22 minute mark we take a walk down The Shambles. This street dates all the way back to the 14th century. The name comes from an old term for an open-air slaughterhouse and meat market, which was the original primary purpose of the street.

Just after the 29 minute mark we see the Jorvik Viking Centre - a great family tourist attraction providing an interactive tour through what the streets would have been like in viking times, right down to the smell! (not a joke)

We conclude the walk by climbing Clifford's Tower - the keep to an 11th century Norman castle built by order of William the Conqueror. This is, unsurprisingly, a Grade I Listed building.

And for those wondering, "Snickelways" are the small streets and footpaths you see around York. The word comes from local author Mark W. Jones in 1983 in his book "A Walk Around the Snickelways of York" and is derived from the words "snicket", "ginnel" and "alleyway"!
