BALFOUR TRACK - TASMANIA 4WD TRIP 2020

Part two of a 22 day trip around Tasmania, Australia. In this part we leave our camp at Sandy Cape and take on the Balfour Track and Mount Balfour before heading towards Climies Track to find a camp.

Hello! I've just learned prior to releasing this video (I edited and uploaded it weeks ago) that you aren't meant to drive Mount Balfour off Balfour Track. I would not intentionally drive a track you weren't meant to (and I would be pretty stupid to film and upload it knowingly to YouTube) but I was completely unaware when we were there, the sign post at the start of the track saying you can't drive it has apparently been ripped out and it was not clear in the handbook for the area you can't drive the track.

We paid for our passes and permits for the area at Arthur River where you receive a pamphlet with information on the area and tracks, it doesn't make specific mention not to drive Mount Balfour although I've re read it since and it does say to only drive marked tracks and to not drive any tracks that are signposted as not to drive. The track up to Mount Balfour is a fork in the road off the main Balfour track and I just kinda figured it was part of the drivable track and I didn't see any signs or evidence not to go up it (I've since been told by a local 4wder the sign was ripped out, which obviously some moron has done but makes it hard for future travellers). It's not one of those tracks where people have obviously smashed their way around a gate and then been like 'oh we didn't know', it is very hard to for an interstate 4wder to know unless doing prior research but as everyone knows, we just make things up as we go and take on tracks we see, I love to explore the unknown.

Anyways my point is, I have obviously done the wrong thing and I understand 4wders doing the wrong thing is a big issue in relation to keeping tracks and areas open for people who do the right thing. This area is also particularly sensitive to locals as they have had some ongoing issues with closures in the area and the locals 4wders are doing their best to keep everything open and stop people doing the wrong thing. I do apologise for this, I considered taking this whole video down (I've already cleared the edit off my computer at this point so I can't quickly take it out, I would have to re edit and make the whole video again which is another 15-20 hours work) but it would kinda suck to just clear a whole section of our Tassie trip and I figured it was better to take this chance to educate people that you can't drive Mount Balfour (most people I've spoken to were also unaware) and to always be respectful of closures and doing the right thing out bush. I have had a couple of conversations with local 4wd advocates for the area and they agreed they would rather me post the video but make sure everyone is aware of the situation. I will post some things on Instagram and Facebook too. It would also be good to come up with a plan with the local rangers to make this more known that you can't drive up Mount Balfour so that people who want to do the right thing will not mistakenly drive up it.
