Cyber Egg Soundtrack (PS1) ~ 36 Minutes of Energetic Tunes for Boppin' Bad Bots
The game's 36-minute soundtrack is courtesy of Haruo Ohashi who started at Natsume in 1994, working on Pocky and Rocky 2 and Wild Guns, later contributing to a handful of Power Rangers/Sentai titles for Bandai through 1996. Cyber Egg in 1997 is their last credited entry and while I'm not familiar with their earlier work, I'd say this is a fitting finale.
Although it's a short tracklist and the redbook songs repeat every 2-3 minutes, there's still a lot to love in this small package. Catchy and bubbly synth melodies become instant earworms as you hear them on loop across each themed area's five stages. There are also a handful of tracks that go a little harder, leaning towards a rock vibe for driving boss themes and the Vs. Battle mode.
Accompanying Ohashi's fun score is the equally poppy title theme 'Jumping Girl' performed by Chiffons, a three-member voice actor unit who released a handful of albums over the years while continuing to do voice work to this day. As you'd expect from a 90s era vocal theme from Japan, it's extremely catchy with a high flying chorus and backed up by some tasty bass and just the right amount of lead guitar.
The whole package is a fun listen, perfectly capturing the vibe of early Japanese PlayStation soundtracks. Before techno, jungle, and house music took over the generation, there was this short era that birthed what I feel was the evolution of Super Famicom music. It's a very specific little niche and one that I'll probably never fully articulate, but I'm happy to have discovered another example of it in Cyber Egg.
