How to Backup a USB Flash Drive into DMG for Future Data Recovery

Here's a video tutorial on how to create a byte-to-byte backup copy of any storage device or hard drive using Disk Drill. This allows you to not just backup your files, but also recover deleted data from the created disk image, not the original drive which may be physically damaged. Creating a disk image is a solution for such cases, as tolerant reading is a much less severe operation than scanning for lost data.

Step-By-Step Tutorial:
1. Download Disk Drill: https://www.cleverfiles.com/getdiskdrill
2. Open up Disk Drill
3. Go to the “Backup” drop-down menu (at the top of the window)
4. Select “Backup into DMG-image”
5. Once you select this option, select the drive that you would like to make a backup image of to your computer and simply click on the word “Backup”
6. Set the location to save a backup file
7. Once this process is complete, you should be able to open up the drive in one of two ways:
- Double click on the drive image on your computer, using the Finder window, and it should mount like any other device. You can go inside and find any files that you need and just drag them onto your computer.
- Alternatively, if it doesn't want to mount the normal way, you can go into Disk Drill and select “Backup” and select “Attach non-mountable images” and select the exact same drive, in order to recover any data from it, by clicking on “Recover”. This will open up the recovery window, where you can browse around files and you can then select where you like those to be saved to. Then you can click on “Recover” to recover any of the important files that you may need from your external USB flash drive.
