Hidden Black History- Now You Know!

Chicken Bone Beach was created around 1900 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, after white hotel owners and tourists pushed Black families away from the main beaches near their resorts. African Americans were forced onto the Missouri Avenue section of the shoreline during the height of Jim Crow segregation.

The racist nickname came from the fried chicken lunches Black families brought because many nearby restaurants refused to serve them. Instead of surrendering, Black families built a thriving community space filled with music, joy, jazz, entertainers, and resilience. Legends like Sammy Davis Jr. and Duke Ellington spent time there.

The segregated beach effectively ended after the 1964 Civil Rights Act, when legal segregation was outlawed. Over time, rising development, changing tourism, and decades of systemic neglect diminished the historic Black resort community around it.

Today, the beach remains public property owned by the city/state shoreline system of Atlantic City, and its legacy is preserved by the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation through jazz festivals, education, and historical preservation efforts.
