Testing the Generator During a Power Outage

Today is a windy day and we just lost power. I assume a tree may have fell on a power line. We aren't sure how long the power will be off, so I am going start our generac gp5500 portable generator. I have a generator inlet on the house and a breaker interlock installed in our breaker panel. The interlock prevents you from having your main breaker and the generator on at the same time. It is a lot cheaper than buying a transfer switch. So I will power the house back up with the generator. This will be a good test of the generator's capability.
