Compulsory Voting in Nigeria: NBA, Lawmakers Clash Over Proposed Electoral Act Amendment

A proposed amendment to Nigeria’s Electoral Act 2022 is igniting fierce debate. The bill—now past its second reading in the House of Representatives—seeks to make voting compulsory, with penalties including ₦100,000 fines or up to six months’ imprisonment for eligible citizens who fail to vote.
Supporters claim it will boost civic participation and strengthen democracy. But critics, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), call it unconstitutional and draconian, arguing that compulsion violates fundamental rights.
Joining the conversation are Uchenna Ogunedo Akingbade, Managing Partner at Sunesis DLP and executive member of the NBA Lagos Branch, and Hon. Victor Chukwuemele Obuzor, PDP lawmaker representing Ahoada West/Ogba-Egbema/Ndoni Federal Constituency.
