Vidushi Ashwini Bhide Deshpande touches what is inexpressible in music.
A long-awaited question in music for a final answer.
From where does music originate ? In human consciousness, how it emerges, from where it arises, what is the source of a music tune, does it emanate from emptiness, this question is asked for years. Ingmar Bergman in an interview, says, either a musician can asnswer or a philosopher. But unanswered.
I asked this to numerous musicians, especially clasical vocalists and instrumentalists. In last forty five years, the list goes long - Kumar Gandharva, Ravi Shankar, Mallikarjun Mansur, Bismillah Khan, Gangubai Hangal, Ali Akbar Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, Kishori Amonkar, Jaidev Singh, Kishan Maharaj, Samata Prasad, Bhimsen Joshi, Zakir Hussain, Bageshwari Devi, Pashupatinath Mishra, Vilayat Khan, Kelucharan Mohapatra, Sunanda Patnaik, Zarine Daruwala, Naushad, Zia Mohiuddin, Fariduddin and Sayiduddin Dagar, Sumati Mutatkar, Abdul Rasheed Khan, Vijay Kichlu, Rashid Khan, Prabha Atre, Savita Devi, Malini Rajurkar, Buddhadev Dasgupta, V G Jog, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Mukul Shivputra, Ullas Kasalkar, Chhannulal Mishra, Ashwini Bhide ...
Still unanswered. Only hint is/as ruhani.
Music is abstract. Formless. Aroop. It has no sense to say, a vocalist sees the musical notes. The Self is formless. Who sees the forms ? Only an ignorant mind sees forms. A wise man sees the formless Self in all forms. A decade ago, Ashok Vajpeyi introduced a serious journal AROOP with stalwart writings from different forms of art such as Charles Correa (it is also senseless to term 'form' for gharana), Kumar Shahani, Krishen Khanna and others. He asked me to write on music for Aroop. To write on the abstract thing with the help of words was difficult for me. I had to go beyond vāk. This is termed as parā vāk.
