"Ballad of a Moonchild" and "In the Bleak Midwinter" - Emma Huntington
With soaring vocals and beautiful viola accompaniment, Emma Huntington and Hunter Montgomery create their unique sound. They stopped by Mormon Channel Studio to perform an original song, “Ballad of a Moonchild,” and an ancient Christmas carol, “In the Bleak Midwinter.”
“Ballad of a Moonchild,” which Emma wrote, is the last movement in a three-part composition. Each of the movements explores feelings of sadness and trial that we often turn away from instead of celebrating.
“It’s not about just looking for the sunshine, as lovely as that is; it’s also kind of about appreciating the moonlight. … We can still be grateful for moonlight type things,” she explains.
Hunter and Emma are talented musicians and have simple advice for anyone wondering how to develop their own musical talent: practice.
“I personally think the concept of failing is huge,” Emma says. “Be okay with failing. Don’t’ hold back. I was honestly terrible at performing at first. Be okay with that. Be okay with feeling nervous. Be okay with failing a lot of times. Because that’s basically all music is—you just fail again and you practice with it.”
Mormon Channel Studio is a weekly video series featuring hymn arrangements and original music by LDS musicians from across the nation.
