Toy Train to the Clouds - English • Great Railways

The world’s best known steam train, the Darjeeling Himalayan in India, was founded in the 19th century and steams on well into the 21st with its original locomotives.

The unique character of this 50 mile mountain railway on the tiny two foot gauge is affectionately portrayed by well-known producer and former BBC cameraman Nick Lera.
Starting on the edge of the hot dusty plains of Bengal, these charming toy trains toil up through lowland forests, round dramatic spirals, up and down switchback reverses, through village markets to the tea gardens of Darjeeling, dubbed ‘Queen Of The Hill Stations’ with its unique architecture dating from the days of the British Raj. The locomotives are Victorian gems, little 0-4-0 tank engines built in Glasgow and Manchester well over a 100 years ago. Paced by camera cars on the winding hill road they put up a tremendous show of raw power from their tiny frames as they storm up 1 in 20 grades to the summit station at 7400 feet above sea level at the threshold of the high Himalayas. A true railway adventure in miniature, it captures the hearts of all who travel on it.
