Hiking a 4,000 footer in Winter: Mount Pierce, White Mountains, New Hampshire
We celebrated the New Year with a beautiful hike up Mount Pierce (elevation 4,310ft) via the Crawford Path in the White Mountains. The trail was beautiful and snowy. Snowshoes were a necessity to keep the impact on the trail lower. In true White Mountain fashion, conditions at the bottom of the mountain were beautiful but at the top there were some clouds that rolled in and brutally cold winds.
The Crawford Path is a historically significant trail that dates back to 200 years ago. Now parts of it is also traverse by the Appalachian Trail. This path goes through the White Mountains over prominent mountains such as Mount Washington.
There are 48 4,000 footers in the state of New Hampshire. Many peak baggers hike both Mount Pierce and Mount Eisenhower, however, due to how we were feeling and the conditions at the summit, we decided to pass on a second summit.
We also ran into a friendly Canada Jay, formerly known as a Grey Jay. These birds are super friendly and are accustomed to hikers. Many hikers feed them but PLEASE DO NOT FEED THEM. Feeding the wildlife goes against the Leave No Trace philosophy. It makes the animals dependent on humans and can often lead to starvation and death.
