Transcript: Before the war Helen had repeatedly carried peace messages from Roosevelt to the Japanese. But after the war, her visits were "atomic". Every American serviceman knew who she was. A genuine American Icon in the flesh. Who had taken on a very arduous and exhausting journey at an advanced age, just to bring a message of hope. What could be more American than that? During the war she had visited American wounded in hospitals. She said that it was the most rewarding experience in her life. Now she had a new opportunity to re-build society.Friends once asked her what they could do for the poor, the handicapped, the war torn. Without hesitation she Replied that they should read a book on industrial economics. Helen Keller recognized the post-war powerhouse sleeping within the Japanese people.Before the trip she was worried about asking anything of a people who had so little.But then she came to realize that the giving would redeem them. The Japanese had a long standing idea of silent suffering. The blind, the deaf, the war beaten and the damaged. The whole country miserable, done for, ended, everything was hopeless. "Nonsense, get moving. Give to those among you who have even less. That will bring you hope. Imagine a better world and you can create it. You will have it. You can re-join the community of the nations and the world." Her example of hope was fundamentally important to the establishment of the democratic society in Japan. And to this day Helen Keller is a revered figure to the Japanese people.
