Ever wondered how a Rode NT1A would sound as an outdoor location boom video microphone? Well, wonder no more.

In this video me and my good friend David Hutchman (Hutchy) decided to find out the answer to that exact question.

During an alcohol fuelled conversation one night, me and Hutchy were were trying to find YouTube videos of the NT1A being used as an exterior video microphone, preferably on a boom but couldn't find anything.

We found this quite bizarre as we both had past lives as sound engineers and music producers, we both love the NT1A and the Rode philosophy and couldn't work out why no one had tried this recording scenario. Surely this is the first question that any self respecting NT1A owner would ask themselves?

So, we went out and found the answers.

The test is three fold. The NT1A coming over the top in a traditional boom position hard wired, then on a mic stand and finally on a boom with a wireless link, the wireless link being provided by Rode's own RODELink wireless system.

For the Phantom powering and preamping of the NT1A for all the takes, I used a Saramonic SmartRig http://geni.us/SmartRig . The SmartRig has to be one of the most underrated pieces of audio equipment ever, it us an amazing Phantom/pre and works great with the NT1A. I've modified this particular SmartRig so that it has a TRS output for connecting to my camera's mic input.

The main camera that was also recording the audio is a Sony FDR-AX100 http://geni.us/SonyAX100 and the synced B-Cam is a Yi 4K+ http://geni.us/Yi4Kplus that I've done a lens modification to for manual focus.

The Summary.

So what started out as a drunken conversation round at Hutchy's last week, as actually turned out to be quite an eye opener.

Although there is LF rumble in the recording from wind and mechanically transmitted noise, I did not filter anything at acquisition or post. This is because I wanted to give the exact representation of what was recorded.

The audio is recorded 48KHz/16bit PCM uncompressed by the Sony AX100, edited in a 48KHz/24bit project/timeline and the final render for upload to YouTube is a full quality encode using the Grass Valley HQX codec. Within the GV HQX codec the audio is 48KHz/24bit uncompressed PCM. This basically gives the YouTube encoder engine the best possible start off point for its audio compression.

Bottom line. The NT1A is an awesome microphone and sounds great outdoors in any configuration :) I hope you have as much fun watching and listening to this video as me and Hutchy had doing it.

Special thanks to Hutchy for doing sound, pressing buttons and carrying stuff. I owe you a pint.
