The past month in the stock market has given us some of the most volatile trading days in the history of several US indexes. We saw the fastest 20% decline of the Dow Jones Industrial index only to be followed last week by the best weekly performances since the mid-1930s. And while this sheer volatility is enough to make active traders nauseous, the recessionary gap that this has created presents a great opportunity not only in the stock market but in several forms of investments. So today let's look at 5 of the best investments that you can make during this recession that really could make you rich in the long run.

With that being said, the first and most common way to make money during a recession is by investing in the core sector stocks that continue to perform well. Obviously, this will change drastically depending on the cause of a recession but typically there are always one or two sectors that are outperforming others across the board and focusing your spare change here can lead to a lot of upside in a pretty short period of time. For example, the current health crisis has caused the decline in every major sector in the S&P 500 but healthcare has still performed much better than the other sectors that have taken quite a beating over the past month.

The next best place to make money during a recession and one of my personal favorites regardless of which stage of the economic cycle we are in is reliable dividend stocks. If you aren't familiar with a dividend, it is essentially when companies share their profits with their shareholders as a thank you for being an investor. This dividend is determined by the company and can fluctuate drastically depending on a number of factors. Dividends are extremely consistent and it can be a great way to offset the volatility that often occurs during a recession.

That brings us to our third way to make money during a recession and that is by investing in real estate. Now anyone who lived through the 2008 real estate crash might think this is absolutely ridiculous. And while the pain and financial losses associated with the real estate crash of 2008 are still real for many individuals, there are also a lot of people who made much of their fortune purchasing real estate for pennies on the dollar while it was so low.

The fourth money making method that has become increasingly popular during the current recession is investing in precious metals such as gold and silver. This one is pretty straight to the point but these precious metals tend to perform very well during market slowdowns. There are a number of reasons for this but the most common is likely the reliability and liquidity of these physical assets.

That brings us to our fifth and final method of making money during a recession and that is by investing in yourself. I know this one may sound a little cliche and it definitely is but at a time when nearly 10 million Americans have been laid off with many more likely to come, when has there been a better time for individuals to take a step back and invest in the interests and goals that they have always had. Often we get caught up in our jobs and daily responsibilities that we lose sight of the things in life that truly make a tic.
