How We Shot a LIVE Music Video in Unreal Engine 5 | Virtual Production BTS
A behind-the-scenes look at our virtual production music video for TÉODORA's "No Distance" from December 2024.
This was one of our early projects exploring real-time virtual production for music videos, combining live green screen performance with Unreal Engine 5 environments. We've since moved in different directions with Nice Touch, but this shoot was a blast and represents some of the most ambitious technical work we did in this space.
TECHNICAL BREAKDOWN:
Unreal Engine 5 for real-time environments
Aximmetry DE for compositing and VP control
Ableton Live for audio playback and MIDI data
Nice Touch Bridge for MIDI-driven particle animation
HTC Vive Mars for camera tracking
Blackmagic Ursa Mini 12K camera
Blackmagic Video Hub, Hyperdecks, and Ultimat for keying
Custom TouchOSC control surface
CREDITS:
Virtual Production Designed by Matthew Cooksey
Virtual Production Operated by Andy Berryman
Camera/Co-Directed by Alex Hancocks
Produced/Co-Directed by Dimitri Moore
Artist: TÉODORA
Watch the final music video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xqfURD6ynQ
The system ran on a distributed hardware setup with Ultimat handling the keying to reduce processing load on the main Unreal Engine workstation. All particle systems were driven live from MIDI data during the performance, creating reactive visuals that moved with the music in real time.
