Beginning Ceramics Part 7: How to Underglaze

Professor Rebekah Bogard demonstrates various techniques to use with underglazes. They include brushing on tight patterns, blending colors together for a painterly effect, creating a watercolor effect, and layering colors on top of each other to create depth and realism.

Underglazes traditionally have a matte surface and are closer in relationship to slip rather than a glaze. However, most underglazes are specifically formulated to be applied to both greenware and bisqueware. Slips may only be applied to greenware, which is fragile.

Used in the demonstration: Amaco Velvet Underglazes and Mayco Stroke and Coat Wonderglazes.
