A US man lived two days without lungs. Why doctors say it could change lung transplants

In a first in the world of medicine, doctors in Chicago removed both lungs of a critically ill patient and kept him alive for 48 hours using a specially designed ‘total artificial lung’. The system stabilised his heart and blood flow until donor lungs became available. Nearly three years later, the patient has excellent lung function. Experts say the breakthrough could reshape transplant care and help critically ill patients survive until donor organs are found. Sneha Richhariya explains
