When Evolution Sold Perfume Instead of Planes Su-75 Checkmate vs F-35 Lightning II

The future of aviation. Promised since 2021. Unveiled at MAKS-2021. Unveiled again at Dubai Airshow 2021. Unveiled AGAIN at Dubai Airshow 2025. Same exact mockup. Five years later. Zero flights.

But Russia did manage to build something. A perfume. Yes — an actual luxury perfume named "Checkmate" sold at the airshow as official Su-75 merchandise. $30 million spent on marketing. Slick teasers. Glossy brochures. Models doing selfies on red pedestals. Everything except an aircraft that flies.

Meanwhile in the West? F-35 Lightning II. Over 1,000 units in active service. Eighteen countries flying it. Combat-proven across the Middle East. Lockheed Martin producing up to 156 per year. Real stealth. Real AESA radar. Real network-centric warfare. Real engine — not a PC cooler held in place by duct tape.

So while Russia parades a cardboard fighter under fanfares and golden confetti, the F-35 launches AIM-120s on actual missions. The "answer to F-35" gets pushed back into the hangar by hand. And somewhere in the dim exhibition hall, a salesman in a gold tie keeps insisting it's all "tactical regrouping."

This is the story of how the most ambitious "5th generation fighter program" became... an exhibit you can't even touch.
