Today's teardown is a VERY broken Subaru EJ20X. This is a JDM engine that was never offered in the US as equipped. Pete provided this engine free of charge for everyone to enjoy! This particular EJ20X has been through a war or three. Someone clearly installed a HUGE inspection port in the top of the engine, which broke a few other pieces. Why? Well it turns out EJ20X are commonly bought as a direct replacement for the EJ205 which comes in WRX's as the EJ20X is a LOT cheaper. They aren't the same however. The EJ20X is higher compression, has VVT, sometimes secondary air injection and ultimately can only be reliable when the proper steps are taken to tune, swap parts, and take the engines differences into account. This particular engine was poorly worked on, and in bad shape even before the Big Bang. Speaking of, this one must've made one hell of a racket when it let go. The damage is pretty severe but amazingly, it isn't the most destroyed we've seen on the channel.
Why am I doing this? My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Imporatpart in the Saint Louis MO area. Part of our model includes dismantling core and broken engines to salvage the good parts from and recycle the rest. We do not rebuild engines, merely sell parts to those who do.
