Aloha! Aulani means “the place that speaks with deep messages.” This beautiful Disney Resort and Spa celebrates the history, art, and traditions of Hawaii. Aulani's lobby is called Maka’ala which means both “the pathway of the eyes,” and also “open up your eyes and look.” Before you even step info the lobby, you'll realize that you're not in a traditional Hawaiian resort space. Aulani is much more special, artful, and full of native Hawaiian references.

As you enter the lobby, know that you are facing the ocean which, in Hawaiian culture represents the future, innovation, change, and birth. Your future literally and figuratively awaits as you enter the lobby. On either side of you, you may notice that the water features are not identical and are deliberately not balanced. The left represents feminine forces and the right, masculine. This difference is carried into the lobby as well where you'll see the murals on the right side are of men, with women on the left.

The Hawaiian cultural references in this Disney resort run deep and most are not obvious. Joe Rohde, one of the lead Imagineers on the design team, explains that the subtle details are meant to encourage conversation with the cast members. "In a way, [e]very single detail at Aulani is meant to stimulate a question, and when you turn to someone to ask them that question, you’ll be talking to someone from Hawaii, possibly a native Hawaiian. And as soon as that happens, your vacation has the opportunity to go beyond the superficial and to actually enter into the realm of real relationships… To get to the real Hawaii… Which is not some piece of art direction… It is people."

I invite you to enjoy this space which I personally hope to be able to return to again and again. For now, traveling virtually will have to be sufficient.
