Crossroads: Change in Rural America Exhibition 2020 Visit to Summerville, Georgia
This video explores a national exhibition about rural life, presented by The Smithsonian and Georgia Humanities Council, that visited the northwest Georgia town of Summerville and five other small Georgia cities.
Area residents proudly collected and added artifacts about their town’s history and identity; unfortunately, the exhibition was only open a week before it was closed due to COVID-19, making this video important so that many can view Crossroads: Change in Rural America.
As you watch the video, use the voiceover prompts to ponder how changes throughout the past few centuries have molded and created deep-rooted values in Summerville, and all rural towns and cities. The exhibition’s panels explore identity, land, community, and how rural communities manage change.
Crossroads aims to bring some of the Smithsonian’s research and collections to small-town America, to bring attention to underserved rural areas, and to showcase local pride and stories. Because of the hard work of dozens of statewide, local and national supporters, individuals and volunteers, this video showcases how the exhibition was presented for the thousands who could not see it in person.
Presenting sponsors The Smithsonian, Georgia Humanities Council, University of West Georgia, and Georgia EMC hope you’ll watch and learn about the past, present and future of rural life and communities. The Smithsonian’s founding purpose still rings true today: “for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.”
