Dorsal landmark navigation in a nocturnal bee / Curr. Biol., June 10, 2021 (Vol. 31, Issue 16)

The nocturnal bee Megalopta genalis has excellent night vision and can visually navigate to and from its nest in a dark rainforest. Recent research has now revealed that Megalopta is able to learn dorsal landmarks to find its nest during homing. These results suggest that spatial variations in local foliage patterns created by gaps in the dark canopy understory against the brighter night sky might be useful as a navigational cue.
