Kasimov is a old town in Ryazan region of Russia, located in the centre of the East European Plain, some 165 km from the provincial capital of Ryazan.. The town sits on the left bank of the Oka River that flows into the Volga at Nizhny Novgorod.
Kasimov was founded in 1152 as Gorodets Meshchersky and was actually located somewhat lower along the Oka river from modern day Kasimov. At the behest of Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, Gorodets Meshchetsky was turned into a border fortress for the Vladimir-Suzdal principality .
