The Fantastics - Live in Concert - 1992
In the fall of 1992, the Fantastics, Magnificents, and Pookie Hudson and the Spaniels performed at the Courage To Come Back organization’s concert event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This 21-minute film, from the archives of musical director and guitarist Steve “Weet” Larcovic, features the Fantastics delivering a spirited and well-received six-song set of their recordings, “Millionaire Hobo”, “Dancing Doll”, “Angie Lee”, “I Got A Zero”, “This Is My Wedding Day”, and their debut regional hit and signature tune, “There Goes My Love”, from 1959.
At the time of this performance, the Brooklyn, New York-based group consisted of four original members: primary lead singer William “Sonny” Forrest (1936-2003), bass Wilbert “Larry” Lawrence (1933-2019), who was featured on “Millionaire Hobo”, second tenor Billy Sutton, who led “Dancing Doll”, and baritone Fred Warner. First tenor Bill Cody, who performed with the reformed group in the 1990s, takes the place of the quintet’s original first tenor, Sammy Strain, who went on to find international success with both Little Anthony and the Imperials and the O’Jays. Sonny eventually retired to Florida and died of cancer in 2003 at age 67. Backing the Fantastics are the P.O.R.C.C. All-Stars led by Steve “Weet” Larcovic (guitar) with John Sabre (saxophones), Steve Kacin (bass), Fred Delu (keyboards) and Terry Bates (drums).
