Who are the indigenous people of Sundaland and why have they been largely forgotten by most of the outside world? Tens of thousands of years before the arrival of the modern "Asian" people we now associate with Southeast Asia, the region was actually one giant peninsula now called Sundaland and their inhabitants were entirely distinct from the modern people we see there today. Over the course of thousands of years, East Asian migrant groups would gradually push deeper into the former Sundaland, nearly wiping out the previous inhabitants to extinction, although a small number of admixed tribes and an even smaller number of full-blooded groups remain in small isolated pockets in mountainous regions of the Philippines and Malaysia.
