Andrew Carnduff Ritchie Lecture | A Conversation with Hilton Als

Hilton Als joins Martina Droth, Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Yale Center for British Art, to discuss the series of three exhibitions he curated in collaboration with the museum.

The third and final exhibition in the series curated by Als, a selection of six works by Njideka Akunyili Crosby is on view at the museum through January 22, 2023. Previous exhibitions featured works by Celia Paul (2018) and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye (2019).

This program is jointly sponsored by the YCBA and the Yale University Art Gallery, recorded on January 5, 2023, at 4 pm ET.

About Hilton Als
Als is associate professor of writing at the Columbia University School of the Arts and a staff writer for the New Yorker. He has taught at Princeton University; Smith College; the University of California, Berkeley; Wellesley College; Wesleyan University; and Yale University. Prior to writing for the New Yorker, Als was a staff writer for the Village Voice and an editor-at-large at Vibe. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for criticism, the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize, the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His most recent book, White Girls, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and won the Lambda Literary Award in 2014. Als edited the catalogue for the 1994–95 exhibition Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary American Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
