A deep low-pressure system is forecast to lash the east coast of Australia, bringing cold weather, heavy rain and strong winds.

Senior meteorologist Angus Hines says eastern New South Wales, eastern Victoria and south-eastern Queensland are expected to be impacted by the first east coast low in three years.
