Diva, Psychedelia and the Cosmos: The Origin of the Unconsciousness in Postwar Asia in the 1960s and 1970s

The Asia Diva: The Muse and The Monster exhibition opened in 2017 at the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art – SeMA, and explores the narrative and transformative events of global popular culture, including the Vietnam War, Hippie culture, and the Apollo 11 Moon landing that happened alongside the rapid economic development in Asia. Featuring the lives and stories of Asian women who shared similar experiences in different regions and revealing their voices that have been veiled behind sociopolitical issues, shifting changes of gender norms and sexuality, and postcolonial experiences of the Cold War and dictatorship in Asia. These voices have been submerged in the official archive of various Asian female singers, in the historiography of contemporary artists, and were manifested in the abstract expressionist art in the 1960s and 1970s. The Hippie generation informed by Marxism rises in revolt against capitalism and the imperialistic values of America through anti-war movements and youth culture led by the communes, known colloquially as the Summer of Love and Rebel with A Cause. Asian women who were inspired by such spirits and were eager for freedom and peace rejected the western material culture during the sociocultural unrest caused by the Vietnam War. Records and sonic archives related to Hippie modernism in Asia, comfort women, US military camp town prostitutes, civilian victims of massacre in Vietnam, and so on are presented besides the artworks. By reviewing the historical archives and moments, Yongwoo Lee intends to present a comprehensive look at the spectra of postcolonial modernity through the prism of the Asian Divas’s songs and popular culture.
