What is Alzheimer disease? Alzheimer disease, often called Alzheimer's disease by the public, is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to symptoms of dementia. Progression of Alzheimer disease is thought to involve an accumulation of beta-amyloid plaque and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain.
