That Dumb Video About Exvangelicals

I'm going to be frank with you. The Babylon Bee's parody of deconversion stories is trash. It's as plain as that.

Why? Testimonials are important for any group of people who share a similar experience. For Christians, this often takes the shape of salvation testimonies. For atheists, the common label is the "deconversion" or "deconstruction" story. In either case, these stories are important. Hearing what others in your position went through can encourage others in similar situations and show them that they aren't alone. And while we won't agree with all the conclusions reached by everybody sharing a testimonial, we need to at least be open to hearing and trying to understand where they're coming from. I honestly don't think God changed a Christian's life, but their journey means something important to them and usually represents their honest attempt at finding truth and improving their life. Pretending their journey must be something obviously crass, stupid, and hypocritical might help me categorize them as something I can easily understand so I can dismiss them. But it would not help me actually understand them. In the same way, when the Babylon Bee mocks "exvangelicals" by saying one story is the same as the rest and their journey is just one of thoughtlessly discarding faith for vapid reasons, they are pretending non-believers are something more stupid than they really are, so they can put them in a neat little category and ignore all the complex implications of their story. This might be comforting, but it's disrespectful and - by design - promotes insular thinking.

Note: Not all people who deconstruct become atheists. While I speak in broad strokes about the age and circumstances of many people who make these videos, not everything I say applies to all of them. And I don't mean to degrade anything about these videos. My point about production values was just that they - like most of us - don't appear to be operating with the equipment/crew that the Bee's character seemed to have access to. I've seen some of these videos before, but I'm not familiar with all these people. I just searched for deconversion and deconstruction videos, and these are some of the first results to come up.
