REMEMBER 2000 (2nd Edition)

IT. IS. FINISHED. And released one week early. Apologies for how long this video took, my life has been rather hectic since the beginning of this year, and I simply didn't have enough time to get it done when I initially planned to release it back in February. But it's finally here, and I promise, 2001 won't take nearly as long.

As the 1990s were coming to a close, many were fearful of the supposed incoming "Y2K bug" that would bring about the apocalypse on New Year's Day of 2000. Of course, that never happened, but what did happen was a year to remember!

In the world of film, Tom Hanks was Cast Away, and Meet the Parents introduced us to Greg Focker and his soon to be in-laws. The X-Men franchise began, paving the way for more superhero movies in the years to come. Charlie's Angels made its triumphant return on the big screen. Disney released not one, not two, but three mainline Animated features, although the Disney Renaissance was now over. Finally, Russell Crowe entertained us in Gladiator, and Jim Carey brought the Grinch to life.

The PBS Bookworm Bunch block was launched with shows such as Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse, George Shrinks, and Seven Little Monsters. Kids' WB introduced us the the electric superhero, Static Shock. However, most of the animated shows that premiered in 2000 were short-lived, most not lasting more than two seasons. It was clear that family sitcoms were on their way out, as Malcolm and the Middle took a more sarcastic approach as it followed the titular Malcolm and his dysfunctional family. Gilmore Girls introduced us to mother and daughter Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. CSI began it's long run on television, spawning three spin-offs and a dedicated fanbase.

By far, the biggest hit of the year was the reality competition series Survivor, where sixteen strangers were stranded on an island, voting each other off to obtain the $1 million prize. The infamous Richard Hatch would ultimately be named the Sole Survivor, becoming and household name, and then some. The success and popularity of Survivor popularized the reality television genre (for better or for worse), and Big Brother would premiere later in the year.

2000 was a somewhat quieter year for video games. Despite that, the PlayStation 2 launched to much critical acclaim, especially since it was the most affordable DVD player at the time. The 2nd generation of Pokemon began with the release of Pokemon Gold and Silver. The Tony Hawk series continued strong with it's first sequel, as did the Mario Party series. We were also introduced to Hitman: Agent 47, and Joanna Dark of Perfect Dark.

Teen pop and boy bands reached their peak this year. Britney Spears had three hits, including her iconic "Oops, I Did It Again...". NSYNC hit their stride with "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me", as Backstreet Boys continued to hold their own, and Nick Carter's younger brother Aaron hit his stride with his solo career. Christina Aguilera continued her rise to the top, as British boy band Westlife hit the scene. Finally, we saw the creation of a boy band before our very eyes, O-Town (and man, did they suck).

The 2000 U.S. presidential election proved to be one of the most historical when the Florida results came into question on election night. The result was not determined until over a month after election day, when George W. Bush was declared the winner of Florida, and for better or for worse, was elected to become the 43rd President of the United States.

2000 was quite the year to remember. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the pop culture nostalgia trip to the year 2000.
