Samurai indicates the members of the military caste of feudal Japan; similar in some respects to the knights of medieval Europe, these warriors played a fundamental role in Japanese history for several centuries. Their decline coincided with the beginning of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which with the end of the era of conflicts saw their figure greatly reduced, only to be completely set aside during the Meiji Renewal in the 19th century in favor of a European-style regular army.
