The Lap-Band is an inflatable cuff inside a silicone ring, connected by tubing to a little port. The surgery involves positioning the band around the upper portion of the stomach and tightening it appropriately, compressing the stomach. The Lap-Band is meant to cause hunger and portion control. With proper exercise and dieting, Lap-Band bariatric patients are expected to lose at least half of their initial overweight.
