How to Reverse Park | DTC Drving Test UK | DMV Driving Lessons UK

https://dtcuk.co/ Today I am going to show you how to do a parallel park for the purpose of the driving test. Many people worry unnecessarily about this exercise thinking that the examiner may give them a very small space to park in.

Rest assured, the driving examiner will give you two car lengths of space to park your car.
During the parallel park, the examiner will be marking you on 2 things. The first is controls of the car and the second is the observations.
Now, control basically means to park within 2 car lengths and being parallel to the kerb, without hitting it.
If you were to touch the kerb, and I mean tough and not hit, you would not fail the test. This would be a minor fault. So, what is the difference between hitting and touching? The answer is the speed.

If you did not do the manoeuvre at crawling speed, this would be a touch. However, at 2 or 3 miles per hour, the touch would become a hit.
You are expected to carry out the parallel park with due regard to other road users. If you see any other road user, stop and recess, proceed only if it’s safe to do so.

As with all manoeuvres, we carry out the POM routine. That is Prepare, Observe and Move.
I am going to start off with my six-point check looking through the left side window, Left mirror, road ahead, interior mirror, right mirror and over the right shoulder in the blind spot.

I am now going to park parallel to the car, about half a door length away from the car.

Once again, I will carry out the POM. However, as I will be reversing, I will start with looking over my right shoulder and finishing looking through the back window.

Reverse back to you turning point. This is the point where you are able to see that you have passed the back of the car that you intend to reverse around.

Here we will start turning the wheel. Many learner get confused as to which way to turn the wheel. If you are in first gear, we turn the wheel in the direction of the front of the car to go.
Therefore, if you are in reverse gear you would simply turn in the direction you want the back of the car to go.

The amount of steering you do is not important. Some instructor will recommend full lock whereas other would recommend less than one turn. Basically, the more you turn in, the more you will need to turn out.

I personally would recommend just under a circle. All around observations at this point is vital as the front your car will swing out.
Slowly reverse back until you get to see a triangle formed in the side mirror. Straighten wheel.
STOP – check side mirror and re-access – Lower Mirror if necessary.
Reverse back steering half circle to right.
STOP and check side mirror and re-access.
Use side mirror as a guild line. Avoid relying on it. I once had a pupil who failed the test because there were leaves everywhere and he could not see the kerb
Look at the front and ask yourself, is the car straight. If there is a car behind you, ask yourself, is your car level to that car.

If the manoeuvre goes wrong, you can move forward and correct the mistake.
