NASA’s EMIT Mission Explained | How Mineral Dust Affects Earth’s Climate

NASA’s Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) mission is helping scientists better understand how tiny dust particles influence Earth’s climate, air quality, and ecosystems.

Operating from the International Space Station, EMIT uses an advanced imaging spectrometer to measure the mineral composition of dust source regions around the world. These measurements help researchers determine how airborne dust can heat or cool the planet, affect cloud formation, impact human health, and even fertilize ocean ecosystems.

This official NASA mission overview explains how EMIT observes visible and infrared light reflected from Earth’s surface to identify minerals with unprecedented detail. The data collected by EMIT will improve climate models and deepen our understanding of how dust shapes Earth’s atmosphere and environment.
