Susan Atkins' Acid Haze to Courtroom Confession

Susan Atkins confessed today that she personally murdered actress Sharon Tate but asserted that the idea for the killings in the Tate home originated from Linda Kasabian, the state's key witness.
In a significant development during the penalty phase of the trial for the Tate and LaBianca murders, Atkins provided a comprehensive account of the events inside the Tate house. Her testimony seemed to be crafted to absolve Charles M. Manson of any responsibility for the slayings.

Atkins, Manson, and Patricia Krenwinkel, members of Manson's hippie commune, were convicted of murdering Sharon Tate and four others on August 9, 1969. The following night, they, along with Leslie Van Houten, were found guilty of the murders of Leno LaBianca and his wife.
Disputing the prosecution's motive for the murders, Atkins claimed that they were intended to divert suspicion from a companion arrested for another murder. The state had argued that the Tate and LaBianca murders aimed to trigger a black-white war.

According to Atkins, on the night of August 9, Charles D. (Tex) Watson shot Jay Sebring, Voityck Frykowski, and Abigail Folger in the living room. Watson then tied a rope around Sebring's neck, linking it to Tate's neck. The victims were told to lie on the floor, and the lights were turned off. Atkins recounted the victims pleading for mercy, but chaos ensued, with Atkins fighting for her life and stabbing Folger. The pregnant Tate begged for her life, but Watson ordered Atkins to kill her, which she did.
Atkins also recounted the LaBianca murders, stating that Manson did not go to the LaBianca home, contrary to Kasabian's testimony. Atkins claimed that Kasabian, Watson, Krenwinkel, and herself entered the Tate home, with Kasabian leading them there for revenge.

The motivation for the Tate killings, according to Atkins, stemmed from the murder of musician Gary Hinman, which she claimed to have committed. Wanting to free commune member Robert K. Beausoleil, arrested for Hinman's murder, Atkins, Van Houten, and Krenwinkel discussed their options. Kasabian overheard and suggested framing others to secure Beausoleil's release.
Atkins, admitting to being "stoned on acid" during the Tate slayings, attributed the night's events to Kasabian's guidance.
