Renewable Energy vs. Conservation

Title: Renewable Energy vs. Conservation

Presenter: Joan White
BA, International Relations & Russian Language Syracuse University
MELP Vermont Law School
Graduate Fellow Gund Institute for Ecological Economics

Thesis: "Renewable Energy vs. Conservation, Cutting Green Tape, but Improving Ecological Outcomes for Renewable Energy Projects"

In this talk, Joan White seeks to bridge the divide between ecology and law when it comes to wind energy siting. Using the state of Vermont as a case study, she suggests a new proactive, energy planning process for wind that would use spatial analysis and public involvement to help identify areas (renewable energy zones) where wind development could be fast-tracked. This is Joan's public thesis defense for her Master's of Science in Natural Resources at the Rubenstein School at UVM, June 13, 2014.

A production of the Gund Institute is a hub for transdisciplinary scholarship, based at the University of Vermont and comprising diverse faculty, students, and collaborators worldwide. Together we conduct research at the interface of ecological, social, and economic systems, develop creative, practical solutions to local and global environmental challenges, and provide future leaders with the tools and understanding necessary to navigate the transition to a sustainable society.
