"Self-portrait by Judith Leyster," 1630 by Judith Leyster

Short background on her 👇

Judith Leyster (1609–1660) was a talented Dutch Golden Age painter, one of the few recognized female artists of her time. She specialized in genre scenes, portraits, and still lifes, often depicting lively tavern scenes, musicians, and domestic life with a distinctive warmth and humor. Despite her success during her lifetime, Leyster's artistic contributions were largely forgotten after her death. For centuries, her paintings were frequently misattributed to prominent male artists of the time, most notably Frans Hals, whose style shared some similarities with hers. This misattribution led to her virtual erasure from art history. It wasn't until 1893 that Leyster's significance began to be rediscovered. A painting, long admired as a work by Frans Hals, was found to bear her distinctive monogram – her initials "JL" intertwined with a star, a play on her last name meaning "lodestar." This discovery sparked renewed interest in her oeuvre, and art historians gradually began to identify and reattribute other paintings to her. While some of her works were considered masterpieces during her active career, her broader recognition as a significant master of the Dutch Golden Age, alongside the correction of misattributions, largely occurred in the late 19th and 20th centuries, thanks to the dedicated efforts of art historians who brought her compelling artistic achievements back into the art historical canon.
