The title track of the Wings third studio album "Band On The Run" was mainly recorded in August 1973 in Lagos, Nigeria. Because drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist Henry McCulloough left the group shortly before departing to Lagos and with no time to recruit replacements McCartney played drums, percussions and most of the lead guitar parts himself in addition to playing bass.
The orchestral arrangements however where recorded two month later at George Martin's AIR Studios in London. Tony Visconti was given three days to write the arrangements for the 60-piece orchestra.

The song is like a medley of three distinct musical passages that vary in style from folk rock to funk.
