Gurdjieff Practices - Self-Sensing, Self-Feeling and Self-Knowing

This is a single audio-video sharing some practical pointers that are helpful in understanding and practicing the Gurdjieff Teaching. All of these practices are derived from a balanced combination of experience and knowledge.

One of the essential principles of the Gurdjieff Teaching is that human beings have three primary centers or functions - mental, emotional and physical or thinking, feeling and sensory/moving. What needs to be added to this basic knowledge is that each of the centers can be experienced in association with a specific region of the physical body. The physical or sensing/moving center can be experienced as being centered in the navel region. The emotional or feeling center can be experienced as being centered in the solar plexus region. The thinking or knowing center can be experienced as being centered in the head. It must be remembered that these three centers are centered in these three locations but that the functions themselves are spread throughout and around the physical form.
The practices:
1. Self-Sensing, Self-Feeling and Self-Knowing - Self-Remembering can better be understood as three distinct processes or practices: Self-Sensing, Self-Feeling and Self-Knowing. Self-sensing is physical sensing of one's own body and the faculty of sensing/moving. Self-feeling is emotional feeling of one's own emotions and the faculty of feeling. Self-knowing is intellectual knowing of one's own thoughts and the faculty of knowing.
2. Sense! Feel! Know! - What one does is tells oneself to, "Sense! Feel! Know!" In this process one sequentially senses, feels and then knows. Through this practice one can develop, differentiate and integrate the three faculties of the physical, the emotional and the mental. Any order of knowing, feeling and sensing is useful.
3. Breathing into the Three Centers - It is possible to breathe gases directly into each of the three centers providing each function with its own frequency of energy. The practice is simple: Place your attention on each of the centers and breathe naturally. Place your attention on the navel region and breathe naturally. Place your attention of the solar plexus region and breathe naturally. Place your attention on your head and breathe naturally.
4. Experience and Expression - Have a full life that engages, stimulates, involves, develops and cultivates all aspects of your being, mentally, emotionally and physically. Ask yourself three basic questions about your life's work: What is my intellectual work in this life? What is my emotional work in this life? What is my physical work in this life? In Gurdjieff's life the answer to these three questions can be found in his Writings, Music and Movements.
