Bottom fishing Miracle + a Yellowfin tuna while targeting Wahoo + a Tiger shark | Garmin Echo map

My goal for the trip was just to catch bait, having been skunked on catching bait the previous trip (only saved by jigging). After an hour of searching I marked opleu (mackerel scad) in 90-100ft and around 20 feet off the bottom. I was lucky enough to catch 9 and gave one away before I headed out. I was targeting wahoo when a 20lb yellowfin tuna hit my wire stinger rig in 140ft. I didn’t waste much time filming the tuna underwater as there were a bunch of marks not far below (maybe other yellowfin but probably sharks). 3 hours passed with no action on live bait, vertical jigging or bottom fishing. I had now given away two of my live baits when a needle fish started munching on my live bait. It was mostly dead and so I decided to drop it to the bottom with no weight and a single 1/0 live bait hook. I still had my high low rig just in the water on the left side of my kayak. My dead bait was still sinking around 40ft off the bottom when a mahi swam under the kayak left to right ALL lit up. It was hunting darting around seemingly attracted by the bait on my high low rig. I cranked my dead bait off the bottom as fast as I dared for fear of tearing out the hook. An eternity seemed to pass as I waited for the GoPro to turn on (3 seconds after hitting the on button). I hit my 50ft leader and the mahi shot off down and I thought my chance was gone. Before I could turn the handle one more time the mahi hit my bait and I only just got the reel into secondary gear. I counted to 5 hoping that the mahi would swallow my tiny hook. I clicked the reel back into gear and the mahi jumped and screamed drag now 80 feet away. Later in the fight the 15lb cow mahi jumped in the kayak only just sliding out. She had swallowed the hook and there was little immediate risk of losing her. After tiring her out beside the kayak I grabbed the tail and lifted her in. I still had two live baits left and I decided to go for a wahoo. It wouldn’t be in the cards as a needle fish killed my bait. I gave my final bait to a different friend and headed in.
