The Past, Present and Future of Immunology Research – with Caetano Reis e Sousa
Join Caetano Reis e Sousa, Principal Group Leader of the Immunobiology Laboratory at the Crick, as he explains the fascinating history of immunology, vaccination and disease and shares examples of his own research into immunity to infection and to cancer.
*In this video*
00:00 Introduction to the immune system
00:57 What is immunology?
03:59 A brief history of immunology
09:54 The impacts of vaccination
11:36 The immune response
24:11 What is adaptive immunity?
35:16 Cancer and the immune system
41:21 The future of immunology research
Your immune system is continuously protecting your body from infection. Working through coordinated signals and responses, it eliminates damaged cells and prevents cancer.
Caetano explains the history of vaccinations and the work of Edward Jenner in developing a smallpox vaccine, which has led to the global eradication of smallpox.
Caetano shares the research his lab is undertaking to help understand receptors on specialised immune cells called dendritic cells, increasing the potential we have to harness their activity for cancer therapy and for developing new vaccines.
Find out more about the wider-scientific environment Edward Jenner was working in when he made his innovative contribution to immunization and the ultimate eradication of smallpox: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1200696/

*About Crick Crash Courses*
Crick Crash Courses started life as talks for our staff, to help everyone working here, scientists and non-scientists, better understand the Crick's discovery research into how life works.
We've now opened our doors to our crash course talks, giving everyone, everywhere, the opportunity to hear directly from our scientists as they investigate some of the most complex challenges in human health.
*The Francis Crick Institute*
The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical research institute and independent charity. We bring together people from different fields and specialisms to tackle some of the biggest questions in health and disease.
Based in the heart of London’s Kings Cross, we’re the biggest biomedical research facility under a single roof in Europe and are home to a free public exhibition space.
