Owner of a 90+ acre goat farm in the rolling hills & beautiful scenery of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, Renard A. Turner has created an oasis that's fully equipped with its own water supply, food supply, and renewable energy sources. Renard and his wife have been growing food and raising live stock for over 30 years. Both are also over the age of 65 and still going strong on a plant-based diet.
Vanguard Ranch is known for its famous goat burgers and curry goat! For the last 2 years his farm has been home to the Crossroads Music & Food Festivals which embrace music from all genres.
Mr. Turner has a wealth of knowledge that should be cherished by all of our people. But it seems as if we have forgotten just how important food independence is to freedom and liberation. This is the first video in our Series, our goal for this series is to awaken our people to the TRUTH that we must learn, regain, and cultivate the skills necessary for us to work the land. Stable Black communities can only exist if we are able to sustain all of the needs from top to bottom. The very fact that the conversation around farming, agribusiness, agri-tourism, and training are all but non-existent at our tables, and in our gatherings speaks volumes. We need to develop the nomenclature, the stamina, the skills, the knowledge base, and the tools needed to become a stable self sustaining community. Our goal is to start a conversation about these things and began to focus on solutions and training the next generation.
