4 DIFFERENT Ways to Overhead Press! (NOT Push Press OR JERK!)

There are far more ways to overhead press than you might have thought. Since most people don't know about these methods, I thought it would be neat to have a video that highlights each unique method and some examples for each.

1. Press 1.0 (Strict Press) - This is the one everyone knows. Very minimal torso and lower body movement. This one is simplest to teach, and beginners ought to start with this one and be proficient before experimenting with other styles because the thoracic extension and volitional total body tightness is a pre-requisite for the more advanced styles. By the way, the numerical reference (1.0, 2.0, etc.) are all used by Starting Strength coaches and seems to be a good way to remember which press is which since they are derivative in this order. (This does not mean that this channel is run by SSCs or is associated with SS or advocates a dogmatic narrow-minded view of strength or health as some people from that organization do).

2. Press 2.0 (Dynamic start with hip throw) - This one is taught by Starting Strength, Barbell Logic, and Barbell Medicine Coaches. The hips are thrown forward so that when you stand back up, the bar travels up about 1 inch. This momentum can be taken advantage of to drive up the barbell quickly.

3. Press 3.0 ("Olympic Press") - After dynamically starting the movement (either with a press 2.0 or with a classic press), as the bar clears the head, a layback is initiated to straighten out the arms and let the upper chest contribute to the lift. As the arms straighten, the lifter stands back up.

4. "Classic Press" (Press 2.5?)- Throw hips forward more aggressively to get into layback. Then stand up quickly. Note that if the Classic Press is used to start the movement in a Press 3.0, you would be doing TWO laybacks.

There is little talk on the internet about the Press 2.0, 3.0, and classic press, and you rarely (if ever) see them being done in a gym, even in a real, non-commercial gym. But if you see it now, you should be able to identify what kind of press it is!

At least the Press 2.0 is discussed plenty in SS/BBL/BBM circles on the internet. The press 3.0 and Classic press are far less prevalent, however. The only person with ample footage of the Classic press on Youtube to my knowledge is Jordan Feigenbaum in his training vlogs on Barbell Medicine. I think there's something to be said about not letting these pressing styles stay buried in the past.

This video is just an overview of different pressing styles. To actually learn more about them or how to do them, here are some links:
