How to Take a Baby's Temperature in Armpit (Axillary) | Pediatric Infant Nursing Skill
Learn how to check an infant / baby's temperature via the axillary (armpit) route using a digital thermometer for pediatric nursing review.
You can assess an infant's temperature a number of different ways: axillary (armpit), via the rectum, the ear (tympanic) or via the forehead, depending on the infant's age.
The rectum is generally recommended as the most accurate method, especially in infants under 3 months old. However, some hospitals or pediatricians still use the axillary method as a first step in assessing an infant's temperature, and check the rectum when a more detailed assessment is necessary.
Besides infants (or babies), you can also use the axillary (armpit) method to check the temperature in toddlers or adults using a digital thermometer.
In this video, Nurse Sarah demonstrates how to assess an infant / baby's temperature using a digital thermometer under the arm.
As always, follow your local protocols and recommendations when assessing the temperature in an infant.
