Kochi or Cochin of Kerala known as the queen of Arabian Sea, is literally Kochu Azhi or the little estuary n port as it was only second to the big port of Muziris or Vanchi at the northern mouth of Periyar. Kochangadi or the little market in Mattanchery of Kochi houses many old mosques established in early middle ages. Chandana pally, Meideen Pally n Chembitta Pally are a few. The word Pally is from ancient Pali language and denotes the Buddhist antiquity of Kerala cultures shared by Jewish, Christian n Muslim faiths in South India. The ancient Buddhist architecture signifying the Asokan elephant or Gajotama in the elephant butt or Gajaprishtta style still survives in the east facing Pallys with their Chaitya Vatayana facades facing the east.
