1968, St Mary's May Day, 8mm, Cine film

This year we're rolling back the clock to St Mary's May Day 1968 as Marlene Perry is crowned Queen Of The May.
Taking place mid-may, on the 15th, May Day underwent one of its first big changes as older children were excluded from the event due to exams and it was reduced to primary school ages + 1st and 2nd years of the secondary school. Attending the May Queen were attendants Lucy Lethbridge, Lucretia Williams, Christine Evans and Gloria Williams. After the ceremony and tea the girls spent three hours touring St Mary's visiting old, house-bound residents and the hospital. Afterwards, as had often been the case, a dance in the town hall was organised by the Round Table for the children.

Syd and Shelia Lewis filmed this (silent) short clip which is part of a very large collection of 8mm reels we recently transferred for the Lewis family. The family have very kindly allowed us to share the videos that are of public (Scilly) interest. As this one is a little on the short side, and there are so many of May Days to get through, we'll end the week with a second 'newer' May Day from the 70s!
[Audio has been added from May Day 1980 (songs) and May Day 1990 (crowd ambience).]

8mm transferred in house using a Raspberry Pi4 and HQ camera and adapted projector, frame-by-frame scanning in HD.

Once transferred the reels and digital copies are then stored safely ready to donate to The Isles Of Scilly Museum when they reopen.
