John Denver - Civil War Suite: Bright Golden Buttons/First Battalion/Yes, I See/Two Brothers (1969)

John Denver talks about his meeting with folk veteran Bob Gibson, and pays homage to Bob by singing the "Civil War Trilogy" which was compiled by Bob Gibson.

John's "trilogy" consists of four songs about the American Civil War: Bright Golden Buttons (Shel Silverstein); First Battalion (Shel Silverstein); Yes, I See (Bob Gibson) & Two Brothers (Irving Gordon).

Actually, Bob's original trilogy, which was released on "Bob Gibson & Bob Camp at the Gate of Horn", only consists of three songs - without "Bright Golden Buttons". John's adding of "Bright Golden Buttons" makes it a "Civil War Suite" rather than a "Civil War Trilogy".

The four part "suite" version was first recorded by The Limeliters in 1963 on "Our Men in San Francisco" album. The trilogy version from Gibson and Camp's recording inspired Gordon Lightfoot to write his own epic, "Canadian Railroad Trilogy".
