For nearly three decades, a ghost haunted the woods of Central Maine. It lived in secret, breaking into homes in the middle of the night and surviving on what it could steal.

To frightened locals, the ghost was a myth until one day in 2013, when the ultimate hermit came out of the forest.

When finally caught and asked how long he had lived in the Maine wilderness, Christopher Thomas Knight replied," When was Chernobyl?"

In 1986, Knight left all his belongings, said goodbye to no one, and entered the woods by himself at age 20. His parents never reported him as missing to the police.

For nearly 30 years, Knight was a hermit, having no human contact save for a single chance encounter with a startled hiker.

Knight took cold baths, shaved, and cut his hair to avoid suspicion in case he was spotted by locals. He avoided building large, smoky fires, so they wouldn't reveal the location of his camp. He relied upon a rudimentary propane stove to cook as well as melting snow for drinking and bathing.

To survive, Knight committed approximately 1,000 burglaries in houses in the area, almost one per week, to stay warm and fed during the harsh Maine winters.

Knight was captured by game warden Sergeant Terry Hughes in the middle of a break-in while stealing candy, his favorite supply.

During questioning by police, Knight revealed he had lived in a small tent and never lit a fire for fear of being discovered. In an interview, the man stated [QUOTE]: "I'm not used to seeing people's faces. There's too much information there."

Christopher Thomas Knight was sentenced to seven months in jail in October of that year. In addition, he paid 2,000 dollars in restitution to victims, completed a Co-Occurring Disorders Court Program intended for people with mental health disorders, and completed three years of probation.

After his release, Knight met with his judge every week, avoided drugs and alcohol, and secured a job with a family member, reintegrating into society successfully.
